Raining

Written By Martin Kariuki on Monday, 2 May 2016 | 02:24:00

It has been raining relentlessly since last night, which means that dirty water carrying paperbags, rotten garbage, frogs, and cholera has found its way to my door, and now there's a pool of sewage at my doorstep, with my slippers and pride floating atop it.
Which also means that I have been having a wonderful experience, frantically sweeping water out of my little, flooded house every 3 minutes and stacking old t-shirts and blankets at the door to absorb the water.
Which also means that KPLC has cut off the power supply because, well, they don't want me to be electrocuted while swimming to the toilet, which, by the way, happens to be the deep-end.
Which also means that I have evacuated my child to dry and safe(r) grounds, a place called On The Table. He will be living On The Table until the government sends me buckets, brooms, dusters, and a sponsor before this my wretched life below the poverty line is swept away by rain water.
Which also means that whilst some people see this as a baby-making weather, I see it as a cruel Man vs Nature war. - Wanja Kavengi
